OUR VINEYARDS

The vineyards of the Oprev Winery

extend over 230 acres, about 25 kilometers from the Danube River. The relief is lowland to flat-hilly, and the vineyards are located on a high ridge with a southwesterly exposure. The soils are medium-leached black soil, slightly eroded and heavily sandy-clayey.

The terrain

falls into the climatic region of the Danube Lowland, which is characterized by a temperate continental climate with hot summers and many sunny days. It is warmest in July and August, and coldest in January.

Climate

The average annual temperature is 11.6°C and the minimum is 7.1°C. The distribution of precipitation is with a spring-summer maximum /May, June and July/ and a winter minimum /January, February, March/. The annual amount of precipitation is 501mm/m². The average duration of frost-free weather is 226 days.

These terroir features are suitable for growing white and red wine grape varieties for the production of high-quality wines.

The entire winery team shares the philosophy that Bulgaria has enormous potential for the development of wine tourism. On the one hand, this is due to the favorable climate and soil conditions for viticulture and winemaking.

THE TERROIR

The exceptional location of the vineyards and the northern climate create the perfect conditions for the production of Oprev Winery wines. The terroir is our precious gem that allows people to experience the drink of the gods.

Our vineyards are located on a high ridge with southwestern exposure, which ensures maximum sunshine. The climate is characterized by hot summers and dry winters, but the proximity to the Danube River—20 km away—also has a favorable influence. The soil is leached black earth, medium sandy-clay, which ensures good aeration and moisture retention. The humus content is 2.5%, which is optimal for growing both white and red grape varieties.

These characteristics of the landscape, climate, and soil determine the variety composition and the way we produce our wines.

VARIETAL SELECTION

We produce wines from our own vineyards. We have established traditions in viticulture, which are maintained by a permanent team of professionals. Caring for them with love and dedication is an integral part of our winemaking process.

That is why we have focused on two traditional Bulgarian varieties and three internationally recognized varieties, which we use to make selected white and red wines:

The traditional Bulgarian variety Red Misket, which, under our conditions, has proven over the years to develop great potential for quality wine;
Traminer, which thrives in very few regions in the country, but here reveals its elite style and is our proven favorite;
Chardonnay, which is a widely grown variety around the world and has the ability to give wines the specificity of the region without changing their typical character;
Cabernet Sauvignon, which over time has proven that in our conditions it can develop qualities that create powerful, fruity, full-bodied, very harmonious wines;
Thracian Mavrud, also known as Evmolpia, a selected Bulgarian variety, a cross between Merlot and Mavrud, which was created as its analogue with the idea that this traditional Bulgarian variety should be spread to other regions of the country with a cooler climate.

This, in turn, also gives us the advantage of providing consumers with an exceptional offer—Bulgarian wine from our own vineyards, the result of years of refinement at an affordable price point.

We have the facilities to organize tastings and offer wine tour enthusiasts the opportunity to learn about the winery's products, as well as the wine-making process and vine cultivation.
